Aseptic packaging is one kind of packaging which is used to pack sterile products (usually foods or pharmaceuticals).
Compared with the traditional way of packaging, aseptic packaging keeps more nutrients, it helps the food to maintain original color, taste,expand the shelf life under ambient temperature. Aseptic packaging is widely used in liquid dairy products, vegetable-protein drinks, fruit juice, alcoholic drink, and drinking water, or in food packaging for sweet foods, nutritional foods, and pharmaceuticals.
Which material is good for aseptic packaging?

Plastic Container
Plastic containers are ubiquitous either as single-use or re-useable/durable plastic cups, plastic bottles for aseptic packaging. Low cost makes plastic container widely used in aseptic packaging field.
Aseptic Bag
Made by multi-layer composite films
Mainly used for high volume packaging and low volume packaging
High volume packaging bags made by “foil+plastic composite material”, capacity from 5 to 200L. Mainly used for vegetable-protein drinks, fruit juice.
Low volume packaging bags made by “plastic composite films”, such as “PP+PE+APH+PVDC”or “EVOH+APH+PS”, this kind of aseptic packaging mainly for liquid dairy products
Paper Base Composite Packaging
This material mainly composed by 75% of paper, 20% of composite films such as PE, 5% of aluminum foil, and 2% of printing inks and coatings.
Among them, the paperboard is a structural material, and the function is to keep the shape and hardness of the package after molding, and the paperboard is made of the virgin paper long fibers. Some of these fibers are bleached and some are not bleached. In order to increase the thickness, some chemical thermal refining (CTMP) is usually added into the board. In order to make the surface of the paperboard smooth and printable, there is a thin coating on the outside of the paperboard.
Polyethylene is an inner layer material which contact to food and make the bag easily hot sealed.
Other plastic composite films According to the characteristics of foods, for example, Sarin resin can prevent etching of aluminum foil with highly acidic beverages.
Aluminum foil is a barrier material, the general thickness is 0.6μm
The advantages of aseptic packaging are:
- Convenience – .Lower transport costs than IQF or Individual Quick Freezing. Decrease storage costs.(like aseptic packaging)
- Food safety – The process ensures that the food is safe from harmful bacteria
- No refrigeration is required – Which saves energy in the transportation and storage of the food product. Chemical preservatives are not necessary
- Less energy is required – Less energy to heat and sterilize the product and the packaging
- Protection of nutritional content – The food product contains more nutrients due to less heat damage; Preservatives do not need to be added
